Impressions from a Thirsty Day-Tripper |

Caye Caulker is a pleasant, windy forty-five minute crowded speedboat ride from Ambergris Caye. On this sunny day in February, the boat unloaded us along with a mob of ball cap sporting tourists and sped off. As the drone of the outboard faded over the horizon, I heard little more than the occasional chirp from a board seagull, and the gentle lapping of calm waters on the shoreline. This place is sleeepppyy. |

I think the island can be described in two words: Hippy Valhalla. I never saw so many tanned, tie-dye wearing, sandal-footed, back packin’, slackers in my whole life. Actually, this is the perfect place if you are the type that doesn’t need anything but a few open air restaurants, cold beer and warm sunshine. The town consists of one main street, with a handful of cafes, back-packers lodges, straggly cats, and of course…hippies. Interestingly, the town tips psychologically to the north, where the walk-road ends at the Lazy Lizard Lounge at the split. This is where the colorful island sentiment collects each day for reggae, cocktails, cigarettes (*wink) and a dip in the aquamarine swimming hole at the end of the line. |

Suzie and I had but three hours languish about this soporific tropical throwback, and decided to make the best of it over a plate of fresh fish and ice cool Lighthouse beer. Both were ideal. I wish I had more to report, but realistically, this is about all anyone can say about Cay Caulker: I walked around for a while, then I stopped and sat down for a while. Then I had some beer. Then I left. Bottom line: If you want to drop out, try Cay Caulker. |
